Modelling of Lightning Discharge Patterns as Observed from Space
Thunderstorms are an integral component in the Earth's atmospheric system and have profound influence on a variety of industries. Specifically, the occurrence of lightning discharges has many negative effects, including disturbances on power lines, the commencement of forest fires and the delay of aircraft missions. Consequently, modelling the patterns of lightning discharges is intended to pro...
متن کاملEffects of Er: YAG, 980 nm and 810 nm Diode Lasers Irradiation on Biocompatibility of SLA Titanium Disks Using SaOs2 Cells Morphology
Objectives The use of lasers for the treatment of periimplant hard and soft tissues is now refmore than ever before. Achieving bone integrity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of Er:YAG, 980 nm and 810 nm diode lasers irradiation on biocompatibility of SLA titanium disks by SaOs2 cells morphology. Methods In this in-vitro study sixty sterile titanium disks with SLA surface were...
متن کاملTowards Laser Driven Hadron Cancer Radiotherapy: A Review of Progress
It has been known for about sixty years that proton and heavy ion therapy is a very powerful radiation procedure for treating tumors. It has an innate ability to irradiate tumors with greater doses and spatial selectivity compared with electron and photon therapy and, hence, is a tissue sparing procedure. For more than twenty years, powerful lasers have generated high energy beams of protons an...
متن کاملImprovement of the atmospheric discharge laser-triggered ability using multiple pulses from a kilohertz KrF laser
The potential ability of lasers to control lightning can be improved by using a train of pulses with submillisecond separations. Laser-triggered experiments in a small-scale ͑10-mm gap͒ atmospheric discharge facility show that the triggering is dramatically enhanced when a five-pulse train of sub-Joule energy is used instead of a single pulse. This effect increases rapidly as the pulse interval i...
متن کاملIntra-cavity cryogenic optical refrigeration using high power vertical external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs).
A 7% Yb:YLF crystal is laser cooled to 131 ± 1 K from room temperature by placing it inside the external cavity of a high power InGaAs/GaAs VECSEL operating at 1020 nm with 0.15 nm linewidth. This is the lowest temperature achieved in the intracavity geometry to date and presents major progress towards realizing an all-solid-state compact optical cryocooler.
